Hawaii Travel Guide

The main island of Hawaii is Oahu, with the international airport at Honolulu on the dry leeward south side of the island, backed by fantastic rainforest mountains. Between the state capital are two world famous icons - Pearl Harbour and Waikiki Beach. Almost all accommodation on Oahu is around the one square mile of Waikiki Beach. The south east coast of Oahu is a wonderful scenic region with rocky coastline, volcanic craters, white sandy beaches and stunning rugged mountains where several world famous golf courses are located. The north coast of Oahu is the surfing region with its huge winter waves between November and March attracting the keenest of surfers. Central Oahu is dominated by pineapple plantations and the US navy and Army bases whilst west Oahu, with its lovely surfing beaches, is rural with a strong Hawaiian community.

The second most popular holiday destination in Hawaii is Maui, about a 45-minute flight to the south of Oahu. The island has several large beach resort destinations along the sunny west coast including the grand resorts of Wailua, the popular seaside town of Kihei, the old whaling port of Lahaina with its world renowned art galleries and restaurants, the stunning beachside resorts of Kaanapali and Napili and the golf resorts of Kapalua. The east coast of Maui is wet and tropical with its infamous winding road to Hana. Maui is considered to be the best location for whale watching and has some excelent snorkel and scuba diving sights. Island cruising is also popular to the offshore islands of Lanai and Molokai.

The Garden Island of Kauai is a 40 minute flight to the north of Oahu. Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and is renowned for its dramatic scenery, excellent hiking, sea and river kayaking and has the most picturesque beach locations in the State. Kauai is the place to go for sightseeing with helicopter tours and sea charters on everyone's itinerary. Kauai has its own stretch of commercial beach resorts at Poipu on the sunny south coast and between Lihue and Kapaa on the east coast. Discerning travellers are drawn to the compelling north coast with the famous Na Pali coastal hike and its secluded beaches and sea kayaking.

The largest Hawaiian Island is Hawaii, better known as the Big Island. Dominated by two massive volcanic peaks which are snow capped in winter, the Big Island is the most dynamic of the Hawaiian Islands. Gorgeous beaches and world champiomnship golf courses on the west coast, dramatic valleys and waterfalls on the north and east coast, the active Kilauea Volcano in the south, excellent game fishing and snorkelling and the most extensive archaelogical sights, the Big Island has something for everyone. The Big Island too has its own stretch of luxury beach resort complexes with stunning golf resorts on the Kohala Coast, as well as being a popular bed and breakfast and vacation rental destination in the rural hills of South Kona and Waipio where coffee and taro farming dominate.
