Picture South Pacific Islands ![]() Large Picture Electric Waikiki Beach, dramatic coastlines, historical Polynesian sites and above all else, a first class tourist infrastructure. Click an icon in the Map of Hawaii for more pictures Honolulu City, the capital of the 50th US State with a population of almost 1 million, is a typically modern US city with its key attractions being a vibrant China Town and the States most visited attraction, Pearl Harbour and the USS Arizona Memorial. Waikiki Beach, extending west from Honolulu City, is Hawaii's beach resort magnet with over 40,000 rooms and 100 high rise hotels. Surfing, boutique shops, people watching and having fun is the appeal. Beyond Waikiki, Oahu has many great attractions including more beautiful beaches, an impressive Pacific cultural centre, the huge surf of the north shore and some of the most breathtaking championship golf courses in the world. Kauai, the Garden Island of Hawaii, has the highest rainfall in the State resulting in vibrant tropical scenery, several great waterfalls and the States only navigable river along which are some important archaeological sites. Kauai has several world class hiking trails including the Kalau Trail along the exceptional Na Pali Coastline. This dramatic inaccessable region is the highlight of sightseeing trips by either boat or helicopter. Kauai has some spectacular beaches. Poipu Beach in the dry sunny north, and Princeville in the scenically beautiful north both have large resort areas and championship golf courses. Maui, the second most visited island in Hawaii has a string of gorgeous beach resorts along its entire dry and sunny west coast. Snorkelling here is excellent and the surf gentle enough to have fun. West Maui, famous for its beach resorts and the historical whaling town of Lahaina, boasts some of the most exotic golf courses in Hawaii. Whale watching between October and March is another major tourist attraction. The twisting scenic road to Hana on the wet east coast of Maui is a popular tourist drive and offers a glimpse at the lush tropical rain forest and several outstanding waterfalls. There are only a few guesthouses this side of the island. Molokai is the old Hawaii, a place time has let stand still. With stunning coastal scenery and some beautiful secluded beaches, this is the place to get away from it all with just enough tourist infrastructure and resorts to make your holiday comfortable. Lanai is a rather desolate place with raw natural beauty. Lying in the rain shadow of Maui, the barren landscape is good for pineapple growing and the islands only town of 2,500 people lies in the heart of the island. The Big Island offers dramatic volcanic scenery with two towering snow capped peaks over 4,500 metres and Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world which has oozed lava continually for 15 years into the sea. Dramatic cliffs along the north coast offer great sightseeing and hiking trails. The Big Island is a high volcanic island whose north and east coast receive high rainfall and is covered in thick tropical rain forest with lots of waterfalls. The sweeping beaches of Kohala and the vast spaces covered by black volcanic rock have been transformed into Mega-Resort complexes with championship golf courses and perpetual year round sunshine. The protected west coast of the Big Island with its steep drop-offs and deep waters are ideal for both game fishing, particularly Black Marlin as well as scuba diving with its boast of over 2000 endemic species of fish. |
