Hawaii Lodging Guide

Small inns are not too common in Hawaii although these represent some of the best value rooms around the otherwise expensive State.

There are a few classical style inns around the historical seaside town of Lahaina on Maui with elegant rooms for around US$120. Lahaina is a charming town with excellent restaurants and art galleries. Maui has several small independent hotels around the cove bays of the Napili Coast and around the beach community of Kihei Town where a simple room can be found for under US$80.

Kauai has several small inns in slightly "out-of-the-way locations" where a nice room with en-suite costs less than US$80 a night. If you are on a sightseeing holiday where it's not essential to be right on the beach, these represent excellent value for money.

The Big Island has two inland villages with classical country-style inns. Volcano Village at a height of 4,000 feet near the entrance to Volcano National Park has a dozen or so small inns which offer the convenience of viewing the lava flows at night when they are visually more spectacular. The farming community of Waimea in the rolling hills of the north side of the Big Island is another place where small inns dominate. Waimea is a popular area for walking and horseback riding and comes alive for its July 4 Rodeo festival.
